Abstract

The need for the replacement of petroleum by a clean and renewable fuel provided the opportunity for biofuels to come into play. The rise of ethanol as a potential fuel substitute in the energy matrix served as a catalyst for billionaire investments to turn their attention to the sugarcane industry in Brazil. This study proposes to verify the importance of systems like enterprise resource planning (ERP) represent to the groups in this sector, seen that this tool symbolizes modernization and process transparency. The change of the sugarcane industry to the new field, the financial area, suggests companies change their management system, adopting the guidelines of corporate governance in order to tune in with the financial mainstream, a particular case of isomorphism proposed by DiMaggio ePowell. This change from industry space to the financial one is intermediated often by private equity funds, responsible for restructuring the company management and reengineering processes. Using the theoretical framework of economic sociology, we will analyze the ethanol market through the chronology of the implementation of these systems in order to achieve the prescribed goal, thereby this research is inserted in a previous work performed by NESEFI and in a project funded by FAPESP.
