Abstract

This research project aims to trace the history of sound techniques in theater between 1970 and 2010, focusing on the transition from analog to digital in sound design, based on a comparative study of two sound designers' archives. Tunica Teixeira (1949-2019) and Daniel Deshays (1950-). Teixeira and Deshays began their profession in the 1970s and over almost half a century have participated in the creation of shows that have marked the history of their respective countries, Brazil and France. They crossed the turning point - and cohabitation - from analog to digital in theater sound techniques. Our study is guided by the following question: how have these technical transformations in sound design affected staging as a whole? Our hypothesis is that these developments in sound design procedures and technologies have had a decisive impact on the fabric of the sound elements in the scene - for example in the voices of the actors and actresses and in the dramaturgical possibilities of the plays - affecting the aesthetics of these shows beyond sound. The technical historicity of the soundtracks studied will therefore be contextualized in their corresponding stagings and compared to highlight the circulation of sound techniques between different territories. Another fundamental methodological approach of the research will consist of proposing scenic and sound experiments, in partnership with artists, in which some of these archives will be reenacted either by recreating their sounds (dissociated from their scenic contexts) or by restoring excerpts from shows using their original soundtracks, which will allow us to deepen our understanding of sound design choices and procedures over these four decades.During the research, the two collections studied will be in the process of being institutionalized respectively by the Centro de Documentação Teatral (University of São Paulo) and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The reception of sound design collections by these conservation institutions is a pioneering event in both countries. The project also foresees actions to promote cooperation between the two teams, seeking to operate technical, epistemological and linguistic mediations between them.
