Abstract

Introduction: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a global condition characterized by chronic inflammation of the airways, leading to airflow limitation and persistent respiratory symptoms. In Brazil, the prevalence of COPD ranges from 6% to 12%, with a higher incidence in men over 40 years old. Exacerbations of the disease (ECOPD), which include increased dyspnea, cough, and mucus production, often require hospitalization and worsen the overall condition of patients. This worsening is associated with peripheral muscle dysfunction and exercise intolerance, factors that significantly impair the functional capacity of individuals. Physical activity is essential to improving functional capacity and slowing the progression of COPD. However, the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs depends on the patient's motivation for regular physical activity. Thus, the willingness to engage in exercise directly influences the patient's ability to maintain and improve their functionality. Therefore, promoting and understanding patient self-determination is crucial to optimizing the benefits of rehabilitation and, consequently, improving their quality of life. Objective: To analyze the association between functional capacity, symptomatology, and motivation level for physical activity in individuals after COPD exacerbation. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study in which data will be collected from n=29 individuals of both sexes, hospitalized with a diagnosis of COPD exacerbation. Assessments will be conducted at the time of pre-discharge, and patients will be evaluated for their motivational level for physical activity (Behavioral Regulation in Exercise (BREQ-2)), functional capacity (Duke Activity Status Index-DASI), and symptomatology (COPD Assessment Test-CAT and Medical Research Council-MRC dyspnea), in addition to cognitive status (Mini-Mental State Examination). Statistical Analysis: Results will be analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, and Pearson or Spearman correlations will be performed, depending on data normality, between data related to functional capacity, symptomatology, and motivation level for physical activity. The magnitude of the correlations will be fixed according to the following values: r=0 (absence of a linear relationship), r=±0.30 (weak linear relationship), r=±0.50 (moderate linear relationship), r = ±0.70 (strong linear relationship), r = ±1 (perfect linear relationship). Hypothesis: It is hypothesized that individuals with COPD with lower levels of motivation for physical activity will present lower levels of functional capacity and higher symptomatology.
