Abstract

This doctoral research proposal aims to investigate the typographic elements in historical cemeteries in Brazil and Portugal, specifically Protestant cemeteries built in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with the guiding question being "What are the typographic elements and attributes that characterize British and Germanic cemeteries in Brazil and Portugal?". The methodological approach is to carry out case studies, field research, and data collection using artifact sheets designed for graphic analysis of typographic elements. Protestant cemeteries of Germanic and British immigrants in Brazilian cities such as São Paulo, Joinville, Rio de Janeiro, and Salvador will be investigated, as will Portuguese locations such as the island of Madeira and the cities of Lisbon and Porto. The artifact sheets comprise information describing the typographic style of the inscriptions, their composition, and their arrangement on the tombs. As a result, it is expected that the differences and similarities between the typographic elements adopted in tomb inscriptions by the German and British communities in Portuguese-Brazilian territory will be identified.
