Abstract

Introduction/Justification: Alcohol consumption is associated with the development of a number of diseases, making it a serious public health problem. Tackling these problems requires effective interventions that can be offered early, comprehensively and at low cost. In the last decade, virtual (digital) interventions for this purpose have shown promising results in terms of effectiveness, compared to face-to-face brief interventions. With the support of the World Health Organization, a virtual intervention (in Brazil called "Bebermenos") was developed and tested in four countries (Brazil, Mexico, India and Belarus), which proved to be effective in reducing alcohol consumption, but with relatively low adherence. One of the proposals to try to increase adherence to virtual interventions is to include online guidance on how to use the site. Objectives: In this study we will compare the adherence to the program and its effectiveness in reducing problems associated with alcohol use of two versions of the "Bebermenos" virtual intervention: with or without online guidance on using the site. Material and methods: The fully automated virtual intervention (software) "Bebermenos" (version 2.0), which aims to reduce problems associated with alcohol use, will be used in a randomized controlled trial with 300 people with high-risk alcohol use/dependence, assigned to one of two groups. To one of them will be offered three sessions of guidance on the use of the intervention, carried out by telephone, WhatsApp or videoconference, lasting up to 15 minutes, every other week. The other group (control) will receive the same intervention without person-mediated orientation. Participants will be included if they are aged 18 or over, literate and achieve a minimum score of 8 points on the AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) screening instrument, have not been abstinent from alcohol for more than a month and are not undergoing treatment for disorders associated with the use of psychotropic substances. The AUDIT, Drinking Diary and Readiness for Change Questionnaire will be administered at the beginning of the intervention.Other instruments and texts for reflection will be presented over the course of the six-week intervention: Inventory of Drinking Situations, questionnaires on the Advantages and Disadvantages of alcohol use, reflection exercises on how to deal with risk situations and relapses. At the end of the 6 weeks, as well as at the 3 and 6 month follow-ups, instruments will be applied to assess the participant's satisfaction with the program and their progress, a questionnaire on adverse effects. The AUDIT, drinking diary and Readiness for Change instruments will be reapplied. The orientation sessions will follow a pre-established schedule, the first of which will take place between the 7th and 9th day after entering the study, the second between the 21st and 23rd days and the third between the 35th and 37th days. Expected results: The inclusion of orientation sessions on the use of the program should increase its adherence and effectiveness in reducing problems associated with alcohol use. We also intend to explore the factors that influence adherence to the program.
