Abstract The main purpose of this scientific initiation project is to investigate the effect of Rydberg excitations on the classical dynamics of mechanical waves propagating in different arrangements of ion crystals. Classically, the problem of ions interacting via Coulomb forces can be mapped to a coupled mass-spring system, with their collective motion decomposed into a set ofnormal modes. Therefore, this project is specially adapted for an undergraduate student, since it, in principle, involves only concepts of analytical mechanics. By the end of the project, the student will be introduced conceptually to the quantum mechanical aspects of the calculations. | |
