Abstract

Climate change poses a critical challenge to biodiversity conservation, with predictions of substantial impacts from abiotic stresses on ecosystems. However, understanding plant responses to combined stresses, such as water deficit (WD) and high temperature (HT), is still limited, especially in non-cultivated plants. In this context, the ecosystemic importance of two pioneer Solanaceae species, Solanum lycocarpum (lobeira) and Solanum viarum (joá-bravo), stands out, particularly for the Cerrado, one of Brazil's most threatened biomes. Lobeira, besides being a food source for Cerrado fauna, has pharmacological potential and is proposed for restoration areas. On the other hand, joá-bravo, a toxic and invasive species, poses a potential problem for natural ecosystems and agroecosystems, gaining international visibility. Based on this information, this project aims to understand the combined effects of WD and HT on the germination and seedling establishment of these species. For this purpose, percentage, average germination time, and germination speed index will be evaluated in separate experiments for each species. Additionally, measurements will be taken for hypocotyl height and diameter, main root length, organ biomass, and seedling vigor index. The seedlings' recovery capacity after returning to favorable conditions will be assessed through the quantification of leaf pigments (chlorophyll a, b, and carotenoids), relative leaf water content, electrolyte leakage, biometric variables (leaf area, hypocotyl height and diameter, main root length), organ biomass, and growth indicators (robustness quotient, shoot:root ratio, and Dickson's quality index).
