The role of US television news agencies in Brazilian politics (1959 - 1974)

Abstract

The aim of this research is to study the work of US news agencies with Brazilian broadcasters, especially TV Tupi, between 1959 and 1974. In the collection of this television channel, deposited at the Cinemateca Brasileira, there are voice-over scripts sent by foreign press agencies (Agence France-Presse, Associated Press, United Press International and Reuters), accompanied by moving images, material that was translated into Portuguese and edited according to the interests of the TV newscast. There are no secondary sources deposited in the collection, such as correspondence, production and editing data, administrative flow, editorial manuals, important documents for understanding the dynamics established between US companies and Brazil, in a context marked by the Cold War and, in our case, by the tensions that led to the 1964 coup d'État and the establishment of the civil-military dictatorship. I am, therefore, interested in researching these relationships based on the documentation in the US archives.
