Abstract

Pharyngeal obstruction by adenotonsillar hypertrophy interferes with dento-facial development, sleep quality, learning process, and leads to changes in chewing, swallowing, and speech, such as dysphagia, hyponasal voice or distortions/interferences in utterance, etc.An important repercussion of adenotonsillar hypertrophy is sleep-disordered breathing, especially obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and primary snoring.Cephalometry and nasal endoscopy are two tools that can provide important information about the size and degree of obstruction of the adenoid. Cephalometry has already been shown to be a valid diagnostic method in evaluations of normality patterns of the craniofacial complex and growth observations. While nasal endoscopy is a more precise diagnostic method and is considered the gold standard in the evaluation of adenoid hypertrophy, as it can observe the three-dimensional relationship between adenoid tissue and the nasopharynx.Considering the ease of access and interpretation of adenoid hypertrophy with cephalometry by the dentist, it is important to identify the sensitivity and specificity of this examination compared to nasal endoscopy. The objective of this research will be to correlate the size of the adenoid on lateral cephalometric radiographs and nasal endoscopy
