Abstract

In the research we propose in this project, we will analyze how the images of the Roman emperors Valentinian (r. 364-375) and Valens (r. 364-378) were constructed in the works of two of the greatest classicizing historians of Late Antiquity: Eunapius of Sardis (fl. ca. 400), whose fragments were preserved in the Excerpta Constantiniana and largely in the work of Zosimus (fl. ca. 500), and Ammianus Marcellinus (fl. ca. 390). With the death of emperor Julian in 363 and the end of the Constantinian dynasty, Valentinianand later Valens were elevated to augustate in a context of instability and uncertainty. Faced with the need to assert the legitimacy of their power and their dynasty, the emperors sought to portray themselves in inscriptions and coins as "the hammer of the barbarians", protectors of the borders and guarantors of peace within the Empire. Through the study of discursive elaborations about the two emperors in the narratives of Ammianus andEunapius, we will seek to understand to what extent, in these different historiographicaltraditions, the almost "propagandistic" efforts of Valentinian and Valens produced results in the social milieux of these authors as to perpetuate their image as strong emperors capable of managing the Empire.
