Abstract

The disposal of a significant amount of coffee beans (Coffea arabica) underscores the issue of waste generated during the roasting process. The by-products contain bioactive compounds, such as phenolic compounds, which characterize their antioxidant action. This characteristic plays a crucial role in the healing process by neutralizing free radicals resulting from oxidative steps caused by tissue damage. Thus, the development of topical formulations using unused coffee beans aims to minimize environmental damage caused by the coffee production process and assist in wound healing, holding significant potential for use in the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, the current project aims to compare the permeation between a membrane and a gel containing extract from green coffee beans for use in wound healing. To achieve this, the quantification of active compounds in the extract will be carried out through High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). In addition, it will be evaluated how much the extract can overcome the skin barriers, by using Franz cells to check permeation, tape stripping for distribution in the stratum corneum and differential stripping to determinate follicular uptake quantitatively.
