Abstract

In recent years, the term quantum materials has emerged as a unifying concept in various fields of science and engineering, ranging from condensed matter physics and cold atoms to materials science and quantum computing. Quantum materials research focuses on phases of matter in which exclusively non-classical phenomena, such as quantum fluctuations, entanglement, and topological states, play an essential role in establishing physical properties. In particular, the acceleration brought about by the family of new quantum materials has been noteworthy in efforts to develop next-generation quantum technologies. The current proposal for a Scientific Journalism Fellowship is linked to the thematic project 2021/12470-8 "Research on Quantum Materials involving Intense Magnetic Fields and Low Temperatures," valid from 12/01/2023 to 11/30/2028. The planned dissemination revolves around the following main themes: - Materials as pillars of society throughout history, - Quantum technologies in modern society, - Low temperatures: the curious case of liquid helium, temperature scales on the planet and in laboratories, - High magnetic fields: how to generate and the purpose of these fields, examples of applications in medicine, - Lasers: how to produce and the purpose of light sources, examples of everyday and laboratory applications. These themes include a general study of the subjects followed by a specific section in the laboratories of IFUSP and research supported by FAPESP in the thematic project.
