Abstract

The usage of DEXA (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry) in the analysis of the body composition of healthy dogs and cats and of those diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is interesting as an objective technique to obtain data relating to their nutritional assessment, as a way to complement information given by subjective strategies of assessment, such as body condition score and muscle condition score. This study aims to evaluate the body composition of animals diagnosed with CKD using three different methods: body condition score and muscle mass score, DEXA, and deuterium oxide dilution, compared with those of healthy animals.
