Abstract

This project aims to synthesize and characterize new monomers and polymers using vegetable oil from macaw palm, grapeseed and castor. These vegetable oils will be chemically modified by maleinization, epoxidation, and acrylation reactions. The emphasis is to aggregate value for bio-commodities, by modifying them into new materials, always following the Green Chemistry Principles. The work consists of two parts. The first is the modification of vegetable oil for monomers. The second part is performing new formulations to be applied in 3D printing by the photopolymerization process. The formulation will be prepared to be used in dual cure systems, in which the polymer is polymerized by light followed by a final polymerization by thermal process. The thermal process enhances the polymer cross-linking, which can improve some physical features such as mechanical, luminescent, shape memory or solvent resistance. Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy (MIR), and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) will be used to characterize all the monomers. Simultaneous Thermogravimetry/Derivative Thermogravimetry-Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTG-DTA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) will be used to characterize the thermal and mechanical propriety of these polymers before and after thermal cure. Finally, these polymers will be tested regarding properties such as fluorescent, shape memory, self-healing and coating materials.
