Evaluation of the potential of dipotassium oxalate in the prevention of erosive tooth wear

Abstract

The objectives of this study are: 1. To formulate experimental mouthrinses and dentifrices containing dipotassium oxalate, fluoride and stannous. 2. Evaluate the effect of these products on the protection against erosive tooth wear. For this, 6 experimental solutions will be formulated, simulating mouthrinses: 1. Negative control (distilled water); 2. Positive control (solution containing 225 ppm F-, as NaF and 800 ppm Sn2+, as SnCl2); 3. F: NaF solution (225 ppm F-); 4. OXP: 1.4% dipotassium oxalate solution (14.000 ppm); 5. F+OXP: NaF solution (225 ppm F-) plus 1.4% dipotassium oxalate (14.000 ppm); 6. F+Sn+OXP: Solution containing 225 ppm F-, as NaF, and 800 ppm Sn2+, as SnCl2 and 1.4% dipotassium oxalate (14.000 ppm). Thereafter, experimental dentifrices will be formulated, according to the same groups previously described, and will be tested following the same experimental design, with the exception that brushing will be performed with the experimental dentifrices and the negative control group will be the base formula of the dentifrice, without the active ingredients. The experimental units will consist of 60 enamel and 60 dentin specimens in each phase (n=10 for each substrate). The solutions will be tested using a 5-day erosion-abrasion model, consisting of 5 min of immersion in 1% citric acid solution, followed by 60 min of exposure to artificial saliva, 4 times a day. Brushing will be performed twice a day, 30 min after the first and fourth erosive challenges, in a brushing machine, with soft brushes and a suspension of standard toothpaste and artificial saliva, in a ratio of 1:3. At the end, the surface loss of the specimens will be analyzed using an optical profilometry. The data obtained will be analyzed with the appropriate statistical tests.
