The project aims to study the reception and appropriation of sebastic news in English early modern theater between 1588 and 1631. It will analyze three plays, written, printed or staged during this period, in which the Battle of Alcazar or the episode of the "false Sebastian" of Venice were dramatized. It intends to observe the news reception in England and its repercussion in the political debates during such turbulent times. The English crown was facing troubles because of its relations with Spain and Portugal as well as the dynastic disputes. At the same time, the theatrical market was going under dramatic changes. Therefore, this research seeks to understand how each of these plays would have mobilized the sebastic news in this shifting tableaux and how, by analyzing them, it is possible to better comprehend the political and cultural transformations of this period.
