Abstract

Healing is a common process for tissue reconstitution among all wounds. This process has tissue injury as the initial stimulus for a cascade of molecular, biochemical and cellular events that drive the healing process through migration of inflammatory cells to the wound region. During its development, healing leads to an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) as a result of recruitment of inflammatory cells as a defense mechanism against pathogens. However, oxidative stress, the result of high levels of ROS, can cause damage to lipids, proteins, and DNA, and is one of the most common causes of delayed wound healing. In this context, it is essential that new topical formulations are developed to contribute to the healing process, which aim to reduce ROS by antioxidant actions, preventing the exacerbated action of free radicals, ensuring efficient healing. Thus, this project proposes the development of a topical formulation for application in healing processes, using the extract of green coffee beans of the species Coffea Arabica, a by-product of the coffee industry with high healing potential, but little explored so far. This formulation will be developed aiming to improve wound healing and minimize the environmental damage caused by the coffee production process, using unused beans with great potential to the pharmaceutical industry.
