Abstract

Gels can be used as vehicles for transporting antimicrobials and allow greater contact between the active ingredient and the application site. Gel formulations based on nanostructured silver vanadate decorated with silver nanoparticles (AgVO3) for decontaminating dental acrylic resin is a novel proposal. AgVO3 is a hybrid nanomaterial based on silver and vanadium that has a broad spectrum of antimicrobial action and the application of gels with this nanomaterial for sanitizing prostheses could prevent the development of prosthetic stomatitis. The aim of this study was to develop an antimicrobial gel with 0.12% AgVO3 for decontaminating acrylic resins. After obtaining the gel with AgVO3, the physicochemical characteristics will be evaluated through centrifugation, accelerated stability, spreadability and syringability tests. The decontamination capacity of heat-cured acrylic resin against a multi-species biofilm of Candida albicans, Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus will be evaluated using the Colony Forming Units per milliliter (CFU/mL) test. The action of the gel on the physical and mechanical properties of the acrylic resin will be assessed using microhardness and surface roughness tests, before and after application. To evaluate the data, parametric or non-parametric tests will be applied, depending on the distribution, with a significance level of 5% (p<0.05).
