Abstract

Among superalloys, Nimonic 80A stands out for being used in the manufacture of components for engines, both internal combustion and turbines, due to its high mechanical resistance at high temperatures and corrosion, mainly under solubilization and aging treatment. These special alloys have a chemical composition with a high content of alloying elements, which are responsible for their excellent mechanical and thermal properties, but these characteristics and the affinity to react with the tool material make machining very difficult. In this context, as a tool option, ceramic materials stand out, such as aluminum oxide or Alumina (Al2O3), which is widely used in applications for various technological areas that require a material with good chemical stability, resistance to oxidation, low density, low coefficient of thermal conduction and high hardness at high temperatures. The proposed work aims to allow research to be carried out, with the aim of studying the use of experimental tools based on Alumina and observing its behavior in turning the superalloy Nimonic 80A, the tests will be carried out in a CNC Turning Center (Romi GL240M). During the tests in order to determine the behavior of the tool, the types and intensity of tool wear will be evaluated, in addition to the variation in the roughness of the samples, as well as the monitoring of the consumed power, vibration and acoustic emission during the tests. Thus, the objective of this work is to compare the performance of tools of the same composition, with 0.5% MgO and geometry (square), but with different chamfer values (T02020 and T01525) and thus allow the optimization of the use of these tools in finishing operations.
