Abstract

Some feed additives can be used in ruminant diets as growth promoters in order to improve the productive performance and feed efficiency of animals. However, due to scientific and public concern about the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, the increase in antimicrobial resistance in some bacteria, the emergence of superbugs, and the prohibition of antibiotic use in animal nutrition by the European Union. In regard, the use of ionophores has been limited, giving way to alternatives derived from natural compounds. Research on natural additives derived from plants has shown that some substances, such as phytogenic compounds (condensed tannins, essential oils, and pungent pepper compounds), have a similar action to ionophores, and promoting modulation of the ruminal microbiota, and consequently favoring improved feed efficiency in analyzed animals, as well as having effects on animal immunity. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of addition with the product Thermal Care® (ADM Animal Nutrition, Decatur, Illinois) in the diet of Holstein cows and under parameters such as milk yield, milk composition, nutrient intake, and digestibility, as well as feed efficiency. it is expected that the implementation of the product will influence the improve of productive parameters and feed efficiency in dairy cows.
