Abstract

The interactions among components of the hydrological cycle determine water flow intensity, paths and exchanges between atmospheric, surface, and subsurface reservoirs. Climate inputs, hydrology and geology are conditioned by the mutual adaptation to climate change and land use change. These anthropogenic actions have made rational water use into a complex and integrated challenge. Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is founded in the joint assessment of surface and groundwater, in search of sustainable solutions to meet the demands of consumptive uses. This constitutes a Complex Water System (CWS), where the connection between the reservoirs promotes constant adaptation of the components. The doctoral project aims to simulate the adaptation of a Water Resource Management Unit (WRMU) from the state of São Paulo facing scenarios of increasing water demand, associated with economic development and climate change, through artificial intelligence (AI) techniques based on the hydrological cycle. However, the social and ecological components are not mathematically inserted in the modeling, but used as a background framework to the AI model. The opportunity of the internship abroad at Washington State University (WSU) at Pullman, working with Professor Jan Boll in adaptative and social-hydrological modeling and watershed management, will help the scholarship holder in her doctoral research and provide an enriching background for her academic career.
