Abstract

Asphaltenes constitute a crude oil fraction composed of macromolecular structures with greater polarity and interfacial activity. Asphaltenes are involved in interfacial phenomena that impact oil production and transport, especially in the formation of emulsions and foams. This study aims to evaluate the effects of the properties of interfacial films containing asphaltenes and commercial surfactants on the stability, droplet size, and viscosity of emulsions. The work must contribute to understand interfacial properties in the process of formation and stabilization of oil dispersions. The experimental methodology includes the investigation of monolayer properties through experimental measurements of film surface pressure and the formulation and characterization of emulsions. In this way, the project intends to be useful to the investigation on stabilization and breakage of emulsions for applications in the transport of viscous oils and dehydration/desalting processes.
