Study of the formation of mixed graphene fibers with carbon nanotubes using microfluidic devices

Abstract

Due to its distinctive mechanical, optical, thermal, and electrical properties, graphene has garnered global attention from researchers for the development of technologies in various fields. In this context, graphene fibers stand out, exhibiting superior properties compared to conventional carbon fibers, with the highest reported values for tensile strength and Young's modulus at 130 GPa and 1.1 TPa, respectively. However, the significant challenge lies in preparing graphene fibers in a scalable manner, continuously maintaining these distinctive properties. Therefore, new technologies need to be developed to overcome these difficulties. Thus, the present research project aims to utilize 3D flow-focusing microfluidic devices fabricated using Low-Temperature Cofired Ceramics (LTCC) technology to develop graphene oxide (GO) fibers. This technology will enable the modulation of GO fiber diameter and the continuous, automated production of these fibers. This project will assess the production capacity (yield) of GO fibers using 3D hydrodynamic focusing devices and the effect of incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the mechanical and electrical properties of graphene fibers after thermal reduction. These properties are of great importance for enabling the development of conductive wires that may, in the future, be used as actuators in artificial muscles.
