Mapping studies about vocabulary teaching in English as a foreign language

Abstract

Over the years, it is known that the different approaches, methods and techniques, regarding teaching a foreign language, had the intent to contribute to language learning according to the interests and contextual aspects of the time, and, when we take a look at previous paradigms, we can see that lexicon had always swung in its relevance in the classroom. With the advent of the communicative approach, vocabulary learning, just like the different abilities in foreign languages, in particular, in English, gained more space in the educational context. However, we argue that teachers and learners still face difficulties to teach or acquire a lexical setlist which allows them more freedom and proficiency in the language. That's because vocabulary learning is a complex process and it demands multifaceted pedagogical actions. Based on this assumption, with this project we aim to propose a biographical research, on studies developed in the last ten years (from 2013 to 2023), about the factors that influence vocabulary learning in a foreign language, and also to know the multimodal means used in contextualized lexicon teaching and learning. Therefore, this research will intend to comprehend the processes involved in vocabulary learning and the possibilities of actions for the classroom, just as to contribute to foreign language teaching and to research in this area.
