Abstract

The general objective of this study is to evaluate the radiographic, B-mode ultrasonographic and elastographic characteristics of the pulmonary and pleural structures of dogs exposed to tobacco smoke, with the aim of: 1) determining the pulmonary pattern(s) associated(s) with tobacco exposure; 2) to verify possible alterations in the aspects of the A-lines, thickness and sliding of the pleura of the patients, in the B-mode; 3) evaluate the rigidity of the pneumopleural interface of the animals exposed to the agent. 20 healthy animals (control group) and 80 dogs exposed to tobacco smoke will be used. As previous examinations, anamnesis, physical and laboratory examination of the animals will be carried out. They will undergo imaging tests in the following order: 1) chest X-ray; 2) pulmonary ultrasonography - B-mode; 3) elastography. Chest radiographs will verify the presence or absence of pulmonary patterns: bronchial, interstitial (structured and unstructured), alveolar, vascular or mixed. In the B-mode ultrasound examinations, characteristics of the lung surface (pleuropulmonary interface) and lung fields will be evaluated. Elastography of the pneumopleural interface will be performed to obtain the elastogram (color scale map of tissue stiffness) and the quantitative assessment of tissue stiffness (shear velocity and Kpa). Statistical tests will be performed for comparison and correlation of the data obtained, with significance set for all tests at 5% (p < 0.05). (AU)
