Abstract

The growing effect of climate change has been demanding the investigation of its negative impact on electrical power systems. One of the most vulnerable parts of the electrical system to weather conditions is the transmission lines (TLs). Among TL technologies, High Voltage (HV) and Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission systems have gained prominence recently due to their power transmission capacity. In addition, the interconnected electrical systems in countries worldwide have been demanding the construction of EHT TLs. One of the challenges faced in various countries is the wide range of atmospheric conditions, which can lead to high amplitude currents and result in the corona effect. This non-linear phenomenon causes an increase in the electric field surrounding the TL conductor, leading to the ionization of the air around it. Consequently, this corona effect can impact the performance of TLs, causing overvoltages during maneuvers or lightning strikes. Another crucial factor affecting TL performance is pollution, specifically on the string of insulators. Polluted insulators can impact the performance of TLs (precisely the backflashover outage rate) subjected to overvoltages due to switching or lightning strikes, which can be very prejudicial to HV and EHV TLs, especially in the case of a polluted insulator string. Moreover, some TLs traverse altitudes of up 3 to 5000 meters above sea level, especially in countries like those located in South America. However, the existing atmospheric correction factors, including those for insulator strings, are only provided by IEC and IEEE standards for lines installed at altitudes up to 2000 meters above sea level. This information gap necessitates further investigation. In this context, this project aims to investigate the impact of corona effects, pollution levels in the insulator string, and TLs operating at altitudes up to 5000 meters above sea level, on the overvoltage in the insulator string and, consequently, on the performance of the TL due the backflashover phenomenon in HV and EHV TLs.
