Abstract

In this project, I propose a three-month internship in Lisbon, connected to the Institute of Education of the University of Lisbon, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. António Nóvoa. My aim during this period is to identify, collect and interpret documentary sources about the teaching of Portuguese language at the Lisbon Normal School and about the collection of books destined for that teaching in the library of that same school during the nineteenth century. To this goal, I propose to conduct field research at the archives of the Lisbon School of Education (ESELx) - which is located in the building that housed the Escola Normal from 1919 on - and at the National Archives Torre do Tombo, both in Lisbon. I also intend to update and deepen bibliographical studies on the history of the Lisbon normal school and its library. In the knowledge of such information and with the guidance of Professor Nóvoa, I will make, during and after the internship abroad, a comparative history of Portuguese language teaching in the Lisbon, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo normal schools in the nineteenth century, not only by simply identifying similarities and differences, but also by trying to understand connections, networks and intersections among the educational institutions that, beyond borders, were part of the Portuguese-speaking community.
