EVALUATION OF THE USE OF AÇAÍ FOR DISINFECTION OF CARIOUS DENTIN, ASSOCIATED OR NOT TO ANTIMICROBIAL PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY

Abstract

The current literature does not present published works studying açaí for disinfection of carious tissue with or without Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy. The objective of this study will be to evaluate the use of açaí for disinfection of carious dentin, associated or not with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy. 90 permanent third molars will be selected and flat dentin surfaces will be obtained. The samples will be waterproofed except for the coronal dentin and subjected to cariogenic challenge with a standard strain of S. mutans. The specimens will be randomly distributed in 6 sample groups according to the cavity disinfection procedure that will be applied (n=15): Group C (control): caries lesion; AÇ Group: açaí; Group AÇ + LS: açaí will be irradiated with laser; AÇ + LED Group: açaí will be irradiated with LED; Group LS: the caries lesion will be irradiated with laser and Group LED: the caries lesion will be irradiated with LED. Counts of S. mutans will be performed before and after the application of cavity disinfection procedures. Comparisons will be made between the total of viable S. mutans between the experimental groups. The results will be analyzed in the Biostat 5.0 Program and submitted to the Shapiro-Wilk normality test. If the sample shows normal behavior, the ANOVA test (Tukey) will be applied. If the sample shows abnormal behavior, the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test (Student-Newman-Keuls) will be applied with a significance level of 5%.
