Effects of inbreeding in partially inbred lines of Eucalyptus spp: a quantitative and molecular investigation

Abstract

Genetic improvement is one of the tools responsible for the success of Brazilian forestry. Although, in the past, gains with selection have been very expressive in Eucalyptus spp., in thelast few years the gain rates have been lower than expected. Research suggests that selectionstrategies that exploit inbreeding, already consolidated in crops such as rice and maize, can contribute to mitigating this problem. With that in mind, 20 superior matrices of Eucalyptus spp.from the company Suzano S.A. were self-fertilized generating 30 offspring per matrix. The 600 individuals were planted in an experimental trial and will be phenotyped for growth traits. The600 individuals and 20 matrices will be genotyped using an SNP chip. The objective of this research is to evaluate, in a quantitative and molecular context, the effect of inbreeding depressionand heterosis in a population 5F0 of Eucalyptus spp. to guide future top crosses. Therefore, in this study we intend to: i) examine the genomic pattern of heterozygosity and the presence of recessive variants; ii) estimate depression due to inbreeding, additive, and dominance effects; and iii)identify individuals through the genomic selection that can be used to generate superior clones in future diallel crosses, and iv) to develop a simulation methodology for predicting inbreeding and heterosis in partially inbred forest species. This study will enable us to analyze the genomic effects on parameters poorly studied in Eucalypts and will be pioneering in the application of genomic selection to a 5F0 Eucalyptus population. Through this project, we intend to revitalize the philosophy of using partially inbred lines to produce simple hybrids, which has proven to be one of the most important breeding strategies in allogamous species.
