Abstract

Skin squamous cell carcinoma (SSCC) is the second most prevalent of all human cancers worldwide. Oxidative stress and inflammation act on SSCC development and progression. Curative therapy for SSCC patients is mainly based on surgical resection, which can cause various sequelae. Silver ions have in vitro activities over squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and topical application of 5-fluorouracil (5FU) has been used with enthusiasm in treatment of SSCC patients. The development of new devices for topical release of new antitumoral drugs is also of great interest and bacterial cellulose membrane (BCM) emerges as an impressive biomaterial for this purpose. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antiproliferative activities of silver (Ag) complex with drugs already known and consolidated in clinical practice as well as to evaluate the efficacy and side effects of the best selected compound in topical application in BCM device in mice with induced SSCC.
