Abstract

André Gide and Marcel Proust have recently been compared by critics with regard to their relationship. However, a point not yet explored between the two is their writer's ideal. À la recherche du temps perdu, by Proust, and Les faux-monnayeurs, by Gide, are novels whose protagonist-narrators are writers. As in their novels, the figure of the writer also constantly appears in the non-fiction writings of the two authors - this is the case of the Gide's Journal, and his and Proust's literary essays - texts that, in recent years, have gained great interest in the fields of Gidean and Proustian studies. In these writings, through their criticism of other writers and works, and generalizing laws about how one should write, they establish values and theoretical postulations that reveal their own writer's ideals. However, the two authors, although contemporary, seem to have different values and different theories in relation to the writer and his practice, which seems to imply that their ideals do not converge. In our study, based on the survey and analysis of their values and theories, we will compare the ideal of the writer - with emphasis on the novelist writer - in some of their extraliterary texts. We chose to work with the period 1907-1910 for Proust, years that cover the writing period of the first volume of the Recherche; and, for Gide, from 1919-1925, years that permeate the writing of his only novel - Les faux-monnayeurs. Given the importance that the writer has in their main works, we understand, then, that the ideal of the writer is a key element for understanding their literary practices and novels.
