Abstract

Radiotherapy is largely used in breast cancer treatment. However, in 98% of the patients, accumulation of ionizing radiation may occur in the skin, causing radiodermatitis. Therefore, it may be necessary to interrupt the treatment due to the impact on patient's quality of life. Besides, this wound can become a favorable environment for proliferation of pathogens. Thinking about that, using an antimicrobial and an antifungal to treat these infections and an anesthetic to relieve the patient's pain can be effective on the treatment of radiodermatitis, enabling non-interruption of radiotherapy. For that, an efficient drug delivery system as nanoparticles incorporated on a topical formulation can be an interesting choice for radiodermatitis treatment, once the drugs can be delivered directly on the wound site, minimizing the systemic absorption. In addition, a natural compound such as Baru nuts, can improve the formulation due to the radioprotective effect from vitamin E present in the seed. Therefore, this project intends to evaluate how much the drugs can overcome the skin barriers, by using Franz cells to check permeation, tape stripping for distribution in the stratum corneum and differential stripping to determinate follicular uptake quantitatively.
