Abstract

Population increase can lead to several consequences, among them it is possible to highlight the increased demand for food and production of solid wastes, wastewater and domestic sewage. Among the various approaches that could be applied in the removal and degradation of organic compounds, anaerobic digestion is widely used due to its advantages, such as the possibility of energy recovery as biogas. Since Brazil is one of the main world producers of pork (3.75 million tons/year), the swine manure generated is a potential substrate for biogas production. The co-digestion of domestic sewage and swine manure with fruit waste can be considered an alternative for anaerobic digestion, since organic waste is favorable to the process, as a source of readily biodegradable compounds, improvement of buffer capacity and nutrients balance, higher C:N ratio and dilution of toxic substances. However, the presence of potential inhibitors in different substrates can lead to the impairment of the biological process. The objective of this research is to evaluate the microbial community and synergistic metabolisms involved in the co-digestion of fruit waste (citrus peel waste) and swine manure, with emphasis on obtaining products of biotechnological interest (hydrogen, methane, organic acids) carried out in two-stage co-digestion, being Stage I- Acidogenic, in Leaching Bed Reactor (LBR) reactor containing citrus peel waste, and Stage II- Methanogenic, in a continuous Expanded Granular Sludge Bed (EGSB) reactor fed with effluent from Stage I. An analysis of the energy potential of the generated biogas will be carried out and energy and thermal equivalences. Variations in organic load (5, 10 and 20%TS.L-1) and HRT (3, 2 and 1 day) with recirculation of 4 L/L reactor/day, resulting in a flow of 48 L.day-1 and in the organic load of the EGSB (5, 10 and 20 gCOD.L-1), will be analyzed. Based on the correlation with the operational data, it is intended to evaluate the impacts on the microbial community involved in this process, through large-scale sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene on the Illumina Platform of samples, as well as shotgun metagenomic analysis in the most efficient conditions in regard to biogas production.
