After the Republic, The Laws is Platos second dialogue - this time, from his later period - that intends to establish an ideal pólis. Although both share a similar purpouse, there are noteworthy differences between them - even in popularity and influence on their receptions. This projects subject is how mousike is treated by Plato in The Laws, how it educates and composes the pólis to the maintenance and foundation of Magnesias constitution, and how it is essential to Magnesias political and philosophical accomplishment. Therefore, we propose a translation of Book II of The Laws, which comprehends most of the arguments that envolve mousikes function in the pólis. This translation, based on John Burnets edition of the original text (1903), will bear in mind the Greek languages complexity, the stylistic and rhetorical effects employed in Platos prose, the philosophical arguments development, and comprehensibility of the text in Portuguese. At the same time, a study concerning the book will be written, aiming to elucidate which are the philosophical, literary, cultural, political and ethical meanings of this treatment of mousike, how it is articulated with The Laws general project and how it is capable of benefiting Magnesias constitution.
