The proposed research aims to study the reception of the work of Machado de Assis in Hispanic America, starting from a survey of critical texts written by researchers, fiction authors and Hispanic American translators. Dispersed in literary magazines, virtual repositories and Hispanic American editions of translations to Spanish of Machado de Assis work, these texts will be collected and organized to later be read and analyzed in order to understand how Machado de Assis' work was understood in the region. Taking into account the contributions of reception theory, the analysis will seek to recompose and understand the horizon of expectations of critics of Machado de Assis' work at the time they analyzed it, being encompassed in this purpose, among others, the understanding of the forms through which Brazil and Brazilian literature were seen in a given time and place, as well as the identification of the aesthetic and ideological assumptions, used in each analysis of the work of the Brazilian writer, which prevailed in the context in which the critical readings are carried out. By keeping the focus on the internationalization of the work of Machado de Assis, the research aims to continue the work started in my undergraduate research developed during my graduation in Letters and Literature at the University of São Paulo, with a scholarship granted by FAPESP (Proc. 2021/04894-2); this previous research examined the paratexts that accompanied the editions of Machado's work carried out from the 1950s onwards in the United States. The proposed research derives from and dialogues with the study developed by supervising professor Hélio de Seixas Guimarães, from the University of São Paulo, on the translation, edition and transnational circulation of Machado's work, with support by FAPESP through a Research Grant - Regular (Proc. 2020/02389-6).
