The progression of human civilization has resulted in a remarkable technological advancement, which have sparked significant changes in the economic market with regards to novel technologies, as the demand for high-performance devices increases. In the context of displays, micro-light-emitting diodes (micro-LEDs) have emerged as the next-generation technology owing to their low energy consumption and wide range of colors compared to the conventional liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) currently used. Additionally, the area of materials for counterfeit detection has received considerable attention from the scientific community due to the opportunity to devise low-cost materials applicable in distinct situations. Within this framework, luminescent materials doped with trivalent lanthanide ions (Ln3+) demonstrate a high potential for these applications, since the immobilization of these luminescent materials in a polymer matrix generates luminescent films that can be incorporated into the architecture of micro-LEDs, to construct a self-emissive display (which do not require a backlight). In the case of anti-counterfeiting, these films can be used for the detection of passwords or fingerprints, increasing the security of devices. Therefore, this research project aims to investigate structural, morphological, and spectroscopic features of luminescent films with "dual" properties, in order to develop a full-working device. The films will be produced by depositing the luminescent phosphors SrY2O4:Ce3+,Eu3+/Tb3+ and SrY2O4:Yb3+,Er3+ obtained via a modified Pechini method onto the poly(methyl) methacrylate (PMMA) polymer through the drop-casting procedure, thereby conferring the down-shifting and up-conversion characteristics to the film, respectively. In addition to classical characterization techniques, theoretical studies of opto-structural properties will be conducted to optimize the photophysical characteristics of the material, thus enabling a better understanding of the system.
