Abstract

Perfluorinated compounds and pesticides are pollutants that have drawn attention as public health concerns due to their effects on non-target species and the environment. Due to the high use of perfluorinated compounds in manufacturing and excessive use of pesticides, these contaminants often coexist in the same environment. The exposure risks to these types of chemicals as mixtures has yet to be elucidated, and they deserve attention regarding their effects on the environment and living organisms. A model that has attracted attention in the study of the toxicity of chemicals is the zebrafish (Danio rerio). They are easy to culture, have translucent embryos to measure development, and have a complete genome sequenced. In addition, zebrafish have a high percentage of homologous genes to humans, facilitating its use as a translational model. The objective of this research is to quantify the combined toxicity of perfluorinated compounds and pesticides using the zebrafish model. Our investigations will assess alterations occurring at different levels of biological organization, including organismal, and molecular-level changes. We will test the hypothesis that perfluorinated compounds exacerbate the toxicity of pesticides. These studies are critical in understanding how complex mixtures can impact the health of living organisms and contribute to risk assessment for emerging contaminants. (AU)
