Abstract

Biomass burning is a major source of emission of trace gases and aerosols into the atmosphere. These emissions are often related to broad detrimental impacts including climate change and endangering human health. Therefore, it is necessary to quantify biomass burning emissions accurately for assessing their impact on the environment and human life. However, these estimates are often linked to very high uncertainties. This proposal aims at improving the biomass burning emissions estimates derived from the PREP-CHEM-SRC emissions preprocessor version 1.8.3 by updating the emission factors in the tool based on recently proposed values. Moreover, the proposal also aims at assessing the uncertainties of this parameter in the tool by running PREP-CHEM-SRC using the minimum, average, and maximum emission factor values proposed by Andreae (2019). The assessment of the estimated biomass burning emissions and uncertainties will be performed at the Brazilian Amazon and Cerrado biomes considering the 2002-2020 period. Overall, it is expected an increase in biomass burning emissions after implementing the average emission factor values proposed by Andreae (2019) in PREP-CHEM-SRC, since these are higher in both croplands and savanna-related Land Use and Land Covers.
