Abstract

This investigation has its object of study textbooks for primary school. The interest in analyzing such artifacts is justified by the fact that they constitute privileged objects of the History of Education, as they show disputes and trends that occurred in the educational reality. This thesis has the central objective of investigating the representation of childhood in textbooks adopted in public schools in the state of São Paulo during the First Republic. Therefore, the set of prescriptions directed to children will be analyzed, with the purpose of understanding the physical, moral and behavioral characteristics that were intended to be produced between 1893 and 1930. This is a documental and bibliographic research, centered on the analysis of reading books and conducted in the perspective of Cultural History. In addition to textbooks, other sources will be analyzed, such as São Paulo state laws, curriculum programs, pedagogical forms, teachers' reports, official publications and materials aimed at teachers. So far, 16 textbooks have been selected and the partial results of the research indicate the aspects that each author and editor considered relevant to the teaching of reading, highlighting the trends of reading textbooks in Brazil.
