Abstract

Introduction: Acute leukemias require specific, high-intensity treatment protocols, which are effective in many cases, but generate adverse effects and often lead to high toxicity. The impact of these changes on nutritional status is not yet fully understood, as is the wide range of very different conditions such as malnutrition, sarcopenia, cachexia and obesity observed in the different protocols. Objective: To evaluate and characterize changes in body composition, functionality and total energy expenditure in patients diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in treatments with high intensity protocols. Methodology: Longitudinal observational clinical study, with data collection performed in two moments, before Induction I and after Induction II of the treatment. The sample will be for convenience, due to the characteristics of the population studied and will have a control group. Will be performed: assessment of body composition through bioimpedance spectroscopy, assessment of resting energy expenditure by indirect calorimetry, assessment of total energy expenditure by doubly labeled water, clinical-nutritional assessment, anthropometric assessment, food consumption and sociodemographic data. Subsequently, the data will be tabulated and test of variance and correlations with a significance level < 0.05 will be applied.
