Abstract

Earth's magnetic field (EMF) changes on highly variable timescales, from milliseconds to billions of years. Monitoring geomagnetic field surface helps to unravel its dynamical origin and, therefore, is crucial for understanding the dynamics of the deep Earth's interior. The South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), which is characterized by lowest values of the total field intensity when compared to bands at the same latitude, strongly influences the components of the non-dipole field. Regional field modeling in areas of surface intensity minima, such as South America, has never been performed and field models may improve the identification of surface intensity minima at global scale and provide more robust constraints on core dynamics over millennial timescales. This PhD project aims to build a comprehensive and consistent database from archaeomagnetic and sedimentary data for the past 10 kyr, integrate the new archaeomagnetic database into the available global field models and develop a new regional model for South America. It is expected that the results of this project may contribute to the reconstruction of the geomagnetic field history in South America, based on stringent selection criteria of archaeomagnetic and palaeomagnetic datasets. In addition, those results should contribute to identify and track the SAA, helping to understand the presence and longevity of SAA at centennial to millennial timescales.
