Abstract

In previous research we observed that the definitions of "good living" that circulated between Brazil and France in the first decades of the 21th century depreciated the dwelling surrendered to the ostentation of material opulence, silencing on the social exclusivism presupposed in the revered "stripped" domestic architecture. The analyses of the perception schemes inculcated by the house experts of the 2000s has shown that the condemnation of the so-called "ostentation" constitutes a transnational component of progressist-elitist narratives on residential good taste. In this scenario, the period before the 2000s and specially the 1980s appear as a time of residences subjected to the ostentatious splendor. On this new stage of the investigation that follows, we will seek to characterize the tastes validated at that time from which today we try to get rid of. Thus, based on quantitative and qualitative treatment of documentary sources (magazines, newspapers, catalogues and archives from exhibitions and fairs dedicated to the house) produced between 1975 and 2000 in both countries, we will build the space of prescription producers as a whole, with the aim of investigating both the nature and direction of cultural exchanges carried out between Brazil and France (uni- or bidirectional flows of innovation vs imitation), and the character and orientation (top-down or bottom-up) of the transfers made between prescribers targeting groups unequally positioned in social hierarchies.
