Abstract

The extension and nature of the Mexican democratization process is a topic of contention in the specialized literature - if on the one hand one could argue that electoral pressure is the most adequate indicator of 'true democratization', there are signs that this process can be broadly understood as going from 1968 until the electoral defeat of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional's (PRI) candidate in 2000. This broader chronology of democratization in Mexico can be divided into two distinct phases: from 1968 to 1988, a period in which it can be seen as 'informal', and from 1988 to 2000, a period in which electoral pressures became big enough for the question of democratization to be transformed from an 'if' to a 'when'. This project aims at analyzing conceptions of 'democracy' present in Mexican political discussions in the first period through two approaches: the official narrative provided by the PRI, accessed through 'informes de gobierno' proclaimed/published by the Mexican president from the Díaz Ordaz period (1964-70) to the De la Madrid period (1982-88); public discussions on democracy, through the analysis of political magazines ('Plural' and 'Cuadernos Políticos'). The analysis as as its background the democratic reforms enacted in 1977.
