Promotion of oral language, literacy and executive functions/self-regulation in elementary school students

Abstract

The partnership with Dr Debbie Gooch has already started and we have been working on a project that we are conducting in Brazil, lasting 4 years, which aims to develop an early intervention program for Elementary School (ES) students, with activities to promote oral and written language and executive functions/self-regulation. It was already carried out: a) survey, with ES teachers, of the essential skills for schooling and the difficulties in students; b) elaboration of an intervention program to be used by teachers. Steps still to be carried out: c) development of the theoretical booklet; d) assessment of 1st and 2nd year students for performance mapping; e) intervention with the developed program; f) follow-up. During the internship in the University of Surrey, activities related to this project will be carried out: 1) all four activity modules will be presented to Dr. Gooch for analysis, to promote improvements; 2) together with Dr Gooch, the theoretical booklet will be developed; 3) the mapping data of 1st and 2nd year students, collected in the 1st semester of 2023, will be analyzed and discussed, looking for reading and writing predictors; 4) the results of these analyzes can be compared to the results of Dr Gooch's research group. The period abroad will allow the continuity of this research, will contribute to the internationalization of research, production of scientific articles and psychoeducational products in co-authorship. It is also intended that this period abroad promotes other joint research in the future to consolidate the partnership. (AU)
