Abstract

Biofluids hold great promise in terms of early diagnosis of various types of diseases, as well as therapeutic monitoring. Saliva, urine, blood, breast milk, crevicular fluid, among other biofluids, can be used for this purpose. Biofluids are easily accessible and minimally invasive for patients making large scale studies feasible. This fact makes the techniques of vibrational spectroscopy (Raman and FT-IR) promising for identifying disease patterns and monitoring disease activity and therapies.Among the most common diseases, cancer is one of the most devastating. When detected in its early stages, we know that the treatment can be very successful. . Thus, the search for new methods or tools to assist in the diagnosis of oral lesions has provided the development of research aimed at detecting changes in their initial phase. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether vibrational spectroscopic analysis of saliva is a useful technique to characterise the onset of oral cancer at early stages. In this project, the use of FT-IR spectroscopy for early diagnosis of oral cancer is proposed, as well as potentially the ability to identify patients who may be at risk for the development of the disease.
