Abstract

The COVID pandemic impacted medical education as students and faculty began to seek alternative ways of teaching, learning and studying through digital technologies to reduce the damage caused by social distancing. Faced with the challenges presented by this context, the importance of developing methods that improve the efficiency of the study and stimulate the development of students' clinical reasoning is remarkable. The objective of this project is to create, develop and implement a digital solution in the form of an application that catalyzes the teaching and learning process of clinical reasoning and internal medicine, targeting medical students. The application will present three bars on its home screen: the first to access clinical cases, the second to access a collection of texts and videos and the third to access a session with frequently asked questions. In order to promote sequential and cumulative learning, after the resolution of clinical cases, new challenges will be released to the user with previously seen and new content. In case of unsatisfactory decisions, the application will pop-up a feedback on the resolution, with tips in text or video format to help in the next attempts. With the first version of the developed application, we will offer access to the digital solution to all 121 third-year medical students enrolled regularly at the Federal University of São Paulo for 30 days. At the end of the 30 days of free use by the students, the digital solution will obtain relevant data for usability assessment, degree of challenge and inherent difficulty, such as screen time, number of correct diagnoses, number of diagnostic errors, number of attempts, time used in each step of using the application and personal impression of each student. The students' opinion will be evaluated through an evaluation questionnaire that uses the five-point Likert scale. Questions will be asked about the technical characteristics of the application, such as image quality, audio and navigation through the digital environment. Finally, questions will be asked about the availability of the application and the students' interest in the topics covered. The data will be tabulated in a spreadsheet forming a database of variables related to the diagnostic success and impressions of the students. These variables will be quantified and compared to data previously collected in the questionnaire.
