The fast industrial development and population growth have increased the demands for water use, and in some situations, these have generated contaminated effluents, causing negative impacts on water bodies, that is, environmental pollution. Among the contaminants, heavy metals stand out, also known as potentially toxic, which pose risks to the health of human beings and other life forms. Given this scenario, an alternative has been the use of hydrogels to remove contaminants. However, these have limited absorption and sorption capacity, which can be enhanced by including highly adsorbent materials. Thus, this project aims to develop cellulose hydrogels without and with clays [montmorillonite (MMT) and zeolite (Zt)] without and with modification [thermal methods, surfactant treated with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and combined methods] seeking to increase the removal capacity and recovery of metallic contaminants chromium (Cr6+), manganese (Mn2+) and nickel (Ni2+). It is also intended to establish the adsorption and desorption mechanisms seeking to obtain a material with high specificity for removing contaminants. Cellulose hydrogels will be prepared from an alkaline solution containing urea and will be crosslinked with epichlorohydrin. Clays and hydrogels will be characterized in their chemical composition, specific surface area, porosity, mechanical and thermal properties, and ability to adsorb and desorb metals. It is expected that changes in clays promote an increase in surface area, seeking to obtain a cellulose hydrogel with structural/mechanical properties that allow its use in cycles and with a high capacity for capturing and recovering toxic metal ions in contaminated water. Furthermore, it is intended to elucidate the sorption and desorption mechanism of contaminants through the establishment of isotherm models.
