Abstract

This project aims to investigate the process of linguistic variation and change in the context of locative relativization strategies in prepositioned contexts in Brazilian Portuguese. Furthermore, it seeks to understand whether and how textual genres (plays and journalistic genres) play a role in regulating variable patterns or linguistic change. For this, we will base on a diachronic approach, that is, we will compare synchronies over time for the proposed discussions. The variation envelope comprises the relativization strategies of Brazilian Portuguese (AMARAL, 1920; MOLLICA, 1977; TARALLO, 1983; CORRÊA, 1998) - that is, standard (with and without preposition) variant, resumptive pronoun variant and pp-chopping variant. Our thesis is to defend the interface between Variationist Sociolinguistics and the study of textual genres. Thus, our analysis will be divided into three levels: (i) the search for patterns of variation and change in the grammatical phenomenon, through syntactic and semantic descriptions mobilized by the target construction; (ii) the analysis of the text composition process, discussing the selected genres and their changes over the investigated centuries; and (iii) the intersection, relating the first two levels with the aim of arguing about the functionality of relativization strategies within the theater plays and journalistic genres from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. We adopted the theoretical-methodological approach of the Theory of Linguistic Variation and Change (WEINREICH, LABOV, HERZOG, 1968; LABOV, 1972), or Variationist Sociolinguistics, to analyze the corpus built together with textual genre studies (BAKHTIN, 1979; KABATEK, 2006; LOPES, 2011; KOCK, OESTERREICHER, 2013; SEVERO, 2014; PAREDES SILVA, 2012; BIAZOLLI, BERLINCK, 2021; KOCH, 2021). Data collection and quantification will be produced with the aid of the R platform (CORE TEAM, 2021).
