Abstract

The purpose of this proposal is to develop foamable microemulsions with fluconazole and nystatin complexed with beta-cyclodextrin as active pharmaceutical ingredients. Foamable microemulsions will be characterized for their physicochemical and foaming properties, release profile and antifungal activity as novel intravaginal treatments for vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC). Current treatments for VVC are usually long, uncomfortable, leave residues and do not cover the whole affected area. In this scenario, microemulsions may be advantageous systems because they can enhance the solubility and permeation of drugs. On top of that, if formulated appropriately, microemulsions can be foamed. Foams are an attractive drug delivery system for patients, do not leave stains or residues, and can expand and cover body cavities. However, fluconazole and nystatin are challenging drugs to deliver and formulate. Thus, complexation with beta-cyclodextrin may be a useful approach to make the formulation feasible. We aim to combine the advantages of microemulsions and foams for the treatment of the recurrent and impairing disease VVC. An appropriate dosage form for female health and well being will be created.
