Abstract

The lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris) is the largest land mammal from Brazil. Although the lowland tapir still can be found in five different biomes throughout Brazil, this species is classified as vulnerable for extinction mainly due habitat loss as a consequence of anthropic actions, such as wildfires, illegal hunting and road-kills. Considering that ecological changes made by anthropogenic actions can influence the epidemiology of diseases transmitted by wild animals, research aiming to detect and identify infective agents from free-range lowland tapirs are necessary to highlight the health status from these animals. Regarding wild animals, microbiome studies are strongly linked to efforts focused on species conservation. Microbiomes are defined as assemblages of both pathogens and commensal microbial species with strong levels of interaction among them and determined by the environment in which the microbiome occurs. Relatively few studies have reported analysis of the blood microbiome from wild animals. Considering the importance of the lowland tapir (T. terrestris), its worrisome loss and disruption of habitat in Brazil, and the recent reports describing the occurrence of different pathogens in these animals, microbiome analyses would shed light on the different bacterial communities that may occur in blood samples from lowland tapirs in Brazil. The present project proposes to amplify hypervariable regions from 16S rRNA gene and use next generation sequencing (NGS) to access the microbiome from DNA blood samples from free-range tapirs from Cerrado and Pantanal biomes in Brazil. These analyses will allow the assessment of different bacterial genera that may (co)-occur infect free-range lowland tapirs as well as to verify the occurrence of potentially pathogenic and/or zoonotic agents in the blood of lowland tapirs.
